Your Hosts
Laura and Eliot Kamenitz have owned and resided in their home since May 1995. They are the
fifth and current owners of this 1924 raised cottage-style house. They both have
professional careers; Laura is a Chemical Engineer and Eliot is a staff photographer for
the local newspaper, The Times-Picayune. Ranger is the resident cat whose main job is to entertain guests when he's not sleeping.
The home is a beautiful 2-story stucco structure with a red Spanish tile roof. It is
architecturally unique and interesting with its arched doorways and doors. The original
structure is intact with very few changes to the original design. There are original wood floors
and ceramic tiles which have been beautifully restored. The long center hallway
serves as the perfect photo gallery for Eliot's photos.
The raised front porch is wonderful and a great place to just sit and do nothing. The
corner lot offers a beautiful view of the peaceful surroundings of the neighborhood.
Location
The Laurel is located in the heart of Mid-City, one block off of Bayou St. John.
It is in a residential neighborhood and is only a 5-minute walk to City Park and The
New Orleans Museum of Art. It is a 10-minute walk to the Endymion Mardi Gras Parade and
the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The French Quarter and Central Business District
are just a 10 minute drive away. There is a bus stop and the new street car (trolly) line within walking distance (5 minutes) which runs to both of these destinations. Off-street parking is available.
This part of the city is home to a variety of interesting locals, including artists,
musicians, local actors, etc.
Guests can enjoy City Park with its golf course, tennis courts, botanical gardens and the local artists Art Market every first Saturday of each month. There
are several good restaurants in the neighborhood, ranging from casual to "more-than-casual."
A local grocery store, drug store, flower shop and a couple of coffee shops add to the
charm of the neighborhood. A morning jog or stroll through City Park or around Bayou
St. John is popular with guests as well as with locals.
Come join us and enjoy the experience of being "at home in New Orleans" with Laura and Eliot.
